Modular Energy Islands for Sustainability and Resilience
September 03-05, 2025 | Figueira-da-Foz, Portugal
About the COST Action
MODENERLANDS focuses on advancing sustainable, modular, and cost-effective Floating Energy Islands to support energy generation from offshore renewable sources. This initiative fosters European R&D collaborations and aims to integrate these islands into future energy infrastructures. Organized into three Working Groups, it addresses resource assessment (WG1), modular platform construction (WG2), and advanced energy storage and transmission (WG3), including Green Hydrogen technologies. MODENERLANDS promotes synergies in research, education, and training, ultimately aiming to deploy resilient energy solutions in deep-sea environments.
About the Conference
The International Conference will mark the conclusion of four years of collaboration and networking supported by the COST Association, taking place on September 03–05, 2025, in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. Modenerlands’25 serves as a vital platform for knowledge dissemination across Europe, aiming to attract leading researchers, scientists, and emerging talents. Their collective expertise and insights will significantly advance the objectives of the Action.

Venue
Located on the central coast of the Coimbra district, Figueira-da-Foz boasts unique natural beauty, historical and cultural heritage, rich gastronomy, welcoming locals, and a high quality of life. Known as a hidden treasure, the city offers urban and wild beaches, scenic seaside and riverside restaurants, and hotels with breathtaking views. Its Boa Viagem mountain trail reveals Jurassic traces and a panoramic viewpoint, while the salt marshes, Salt and Sea Museums, and Cabo Mondego lighthouse offer endless discoveries.
The University of Coimbra Campus at Figueira-da-Foz (CUCFF) supports interdisciplinary education, research, and innovation initiatives centered on sustainable development. Its primary focus areas are sustainable tourism, the blue economy, and the circular economy, aligning with broader goals of environmental and economic sustainability. The Centro de Artes e Espectáculos (CAE), inaugurated in 2002, is a large cultural venue featuring two auditoriums (with 200 and 800 seats), an outdoor amphitheater, a foyer, support rooms, studios, and four exhibition spaces.
